Pantsula x Basement Jaxx.

Basement Jaxx’s new video for What a difference your love makes, is awesome. 1 – because its mainstream house music meets street dance culture. 2 – It’s a showcase of  the hip-popping, tap-and-glide talent and energy that is uniquely South African.

Shot by director Damian Weilers, the visuals follow pantsula dance-brothers Donald Shogwe and Shimane Mdluli, from Alexandra in Johannesburg.

Augmented Reality by IKEA.

, , ,

IKEA is by far one of the best budget DIY furniture and homeware stores – on August 25 2013 they are launching their augmented reality catalogue designed by SD techno-design company Inition. The app will allow people to select a piece of furniture and see it in location, one will probably be able to buy it online and then have it delivered. Although there’s still fun in testing out (and lounging on) furniture at an IKEA store.

These images are the work of designer Osiris Hertman. What I love about his work is that it seems curated over a long period of time. Rather than have the highly glossed, brand new finished look , his spaces feel experienced, well-cultured and full of narrative.

Digital Birth.

, , , ,

Icon Magazine, asked design thinktank IWANT to redesign the birth certificate as part of their series on rethinking and designed ordinary things and objects in innovative ways.

These images are the design response by IWANT for the birth certificate – a combination of a digital and hardcopy document that records more than just the basic technical information required for a birth certificate but captures the birth like a personalized event in time.

I love the way the certificate provides so much graphic detail but has so much simplicity in its design.

Needless to say, I’d love to have one.

Garden Library.

These images are of a coversion of an old house in Mexico City into a library and cultural centre. The project was headed by Mexican architects Fernanda Canales and Arquitectura 911sc. The library is designed as an urban garden library, framed by a concrete portal and enclosed on one side by glass curtain wall and held by a classical heritage facade on the other.

I find the resultant space and form an innovative take on the traditional forecourt to most classical facades. More so the walls cladded in literature adds so elaborately to the space.

LED Colonade.

These images are the catwalk design for the Vionnet Ready-to-Wear 2013 Fashion week show at the Paris Intercontinental Hotel. Designed and produced by Bureau Betak, the LED-illuminated forest of columns and their stylized proportion made for a dynamic centerpiece to the classical and ornate architectural backdrop of the Intercontinental Heritage Hotel.

Windows of New York.

Amazing illustrations by José Guízar for a series titled Windows of New York – a graphic illustration of each districts’ windows’ architectural style, design and character. I love the way something so simple can capture the architectural essence of a place.
